= A Massive Canvas Celebrating NYC
For nearly five months, during the bleak early days of the pandemic, a mural capturing the spirit of New York City and her people hung on the north side of a six-story containerized sculpture overlooking the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn. The canvas entitled, “Chronicles of New York” is the work of French photographer and street artist, JR. It depicted 1,128 individually photographed New Yorkers arranged as a collage atop a familiar city scape background. Viewed from the right angle it gave the illusion of a seamless panorama, connecting the artwork with the surrounding built environment.
This monumental, public art installation was an extension of JR’s exhibit “Chronicles” which had been showcased concurrently at The Brooklyn Museum. JR and his team used a mobile studio throughout the five boroughs to capture the essence of New York City. Each location was carefully chosen to best typify the communities, its people, and its energy. The project came together under the guidance of LOT-EK, a New York based container centric design firm. The architectural sculpture was completed by carefully connecting and stacking shipping containers in a triangular configuration. The finished product was a powerful and compelling public art piece combining art and architecture.
